Why is Hoodia Still Popular?

| November 2, 2009 | 0 Comments

We hear about one weight loss supplement and it is quickly replaced with another more popular supplement. We used to use ephedra in virtually every supplement. It was a highly effective appetite suppressant with some unfortunate side effects including DEATH. After its ban, the weight loss industry changed its focus to more natural solutions. Many of these natural appetite suppressants were a bit too mild, but hoodia has remained a favorite amongst users. Why?

Hoodia is found in South Africa. It is a cactus that has been used by the natives as an appetite suppressant. They chew on the stems of the hoodia cactus while out on long hunts where vegetation is scarce. Something in the plant helped them control their hunger and focus on the hunt.

That something is p57. When p57 is in the body, the brain sees it as glucose. When you have that familiar feeling of hunger, it is because the brain sensed a drop in blood glucose and triggered hunger. Obviously, this is the point where most of us eat whether we are trying to lose weight or not.

Hoodia can fool the brain when blood glucose drops because p57 makes it seem as though blood glucose is normal. You do not feel hungry. If you have diabetes, this is also why you should not use hoodia because the management of diabetes relies on stable blood glucose. If you are not diabetic and consume a diet high in sugar (typical Western diet), hoodia might be your ticket to appetite control and weight loss.

The popularity behind hoodia may have a lot to do with our typical Western diets. We eat diets loaded in sugar. Refined carbohydrates and canned products can contain high amounts of sugar in one shape or form. As a population, we have seen obesity rates spike over the past 20 years or more. There is suggestion that this could be large in part due to our consumption of these types of food.

The human body attempts to adapt to whatever you are feeding it. The response to increased amounts of sugar consumption has been altered blood glucose levels. Your brain responds to higher than normal levels and triggers hunger sooner than necessary. In other words, you become hungry before you need to eat. Worst of all, you crave more sugar. This is why hoodia remains a popular appetites suppressant in today’s world.

Think about what ditching the refined carbohydrates would do for your weight loss efforts. All of those empty calories, burned up quickly and converted to fat would be off the menu. In their place could be more healthful choices that promote weight loss. If hoodia can help you achieve that difficult feat, then I can see why it remains a popular appetite suppressant.

Hoodia is still popular because it is a relatively harmless weight loss product, yet it tackles one of our biggest Western pitfalls in the path towards healthy weight loss. Make sure you purchase 100% pure hoodia supplements.
